Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles Scottsdale
About this place
Larry White, known as Lo-Lo, started in the restaurant business bussing tables at his grandmother's soul food restaurant, Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe. On visits to Los Angeles he ate at Roscoe's, famous for chicken and waffles, and decided to open his own place with his grandmother's blessing. After working weekends for years he opened Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles in 2002, and a Scottsdale location followed in 2009.
The pairing
White points out that the chicken and waffle combination goes back to Wells Cabaret in Harlem in the 1920s, and the signature plates at Lo-Lo's carry that story forward. Combos are named for family and friends, and chicken and waffles are served all day, so a 9 AM table and a 6 PM table can both order the same plate.
Beyond the headline
The menu stretches to soul food and Southern comfort dishes: catfish, shrimp and grits, smothered chicken, chicken gizzards, collard greens and grits. Breakfast is served all day too, with chicken omelets and waffle sandwiches. The drink list includes house-made Kool-Aid, and banana pudding is on the dessert side.
Room and space
The Scottsdale restaurant on North Scottsdale Road covers about 5,400 square feet and can seat up to 240 people across a large indoor dining area, a full bar and an outdoor patio, which is why groups tend to choose it.
